You Shouldn't Depend

You shouldn't depend on anything so blindly.
You shouldn't say, "I can't live without her".
You shouldn't say this.
Because you can.
No need to say such cliche words.
For example, you shouldn't love too much. If she loves you less, you get hurt.
And generally she loves you less than you love her.
If you don't love much, you don't pity much.
Besides if you don't own much, you don't belong much.
In fact you shouldn't own much even your hands and feet.
You should pretend as if they are not yours.
So if you don't have anything, you don't fear of losing.
You should pretend as if you can live without them as well.
For example, you shouldn't have many furnitures at home.
You should be able to walk pell-mell.
If you should necessarily own something,
You should own where roofs meet the sky.
You should own the sky,
the sun, the moon and the stars...
For example, the polar star should be yours.
"This is mine", you should say.
If you really want something to belong to you,
For example, the rainbow should be yours.
If you really should belong to something, you should belong to colours.
For example, to orange or to pink.
Or you should belong to Heaven.
You should live without owning and belonging too much,
As if the life may flow away from your palms every moment,
As well as it will stay always yours.
You should live as attached to it by holding from its ends...

Thank you for translating this poem. It says so much about the human condition. You have illustrated it with a painting of the famous Ringling Bros. clown, Walt Kelly. I had the privilege of meeting him and working with him for a day in some tv commercial work. Without his makeup, you could spend hours with him and not know that he was a clown, or world-famous. Later, before he died, his son was convicted of murder and sent to prison. The man who only played a sad clown, died a sad father.

Count Sneaky:

Thanks indeed for the knowledge about Walt Kelly. I really didn't know his son being put in prison and his death as a sad father because of this... Strange and bitter that he has died in accordance with his sad clown appearance.
This clown picture really affects me and suits with such poems so that I've used it also on the top of my last poem translation. (the most beautiful side of being with you)...
